    Alveoloplasty

The alveolar bone is the portion of a person’s jaw bone that holds the teeth in place. When teeth are lost, the remaining bone may become irregular in shape. This can create a problem for those who wear dentures. The dentures may not fit properly creating painful sore spots on the residual ridge where the teeth were removed. An alveoloplasty procedure is performed to smooth the bony irregularities and to create a comfortable “seat” for the denture. See our periodontist in Langhorne if you believe you can benefit from this surgery.

    How Is It Performed?

Local anesthesia is administered to the surgical area. Once the mouth is sufficiently numb, and the patient is comfortable, gum flaps are elevated to reveal the underlying jaw bone. All irregularities are smoothed, shaped, the gum tissue is replaced and sutured.

    When Is the Procedure Performed?

If you are getting an alveoloplasty in conjunction with an extraction, then the two procedures can usually be completed at the same time. It may also be conducted on a separate date from the extraction if your surgeon discovers the need for it at a later time.

Sometimes, although an individual may be wearing dentures for a long time, the remaining ridge of bone goes through resorption and the shape changes over many years. The alveoloplasy surgery may need to be performed prior to having a new set of dentures fabricated so that they fit more comfortably.
