    Crown Lengthening

In an esthetically pleasing smile, a certain ratio is desired in the amount of tooth display. Some people suffer from having teeth that appear too short or have too much gum tissue showing in their smile that is overgrowing onto the teeth. In these cases, we offer esthetic crown lengthening to help patients who want a healthier, more attractive smile. Our Langhorne periodontist is highly skilled when it comes to making your smile shine!

    Why Is the Procedure Performed?

Some patients simply want a cosmetic crown lengthening while others want it for more functional purposes. Having too much gum tissue exposed is colloquially referred to as a “gummy smile.” Our periodontist in Langhorne has performed numerous esthetic treatments designed to help people who want a more attractive smile.

There are also functional reasons for crown lengthening treatments. For example, an individual may require a filling or a crown to fix an area of tooth decay that has extended below the gum line. In this situation, a crown lengthening would be recommended to help the patient get the best treatment.

    How Is the Treatment Done?

Regardless of why the procedure is necessary, the surgical approach is consistent. Local anesthetics are administered to sufficiently numb the treatment area. Next, the periodontist will trim or reposition the gum tissue, and reshape the bone. The newly exposed tooth will be more esthetically pleasing if no restoration is needed. The accessible healthy tooth structure above the gum line will allow your dentist to fabricate a well-fitted restoration covering the previously unreachable area of decay.

    What Is Required for Aftercare?

Immediately after the procedure, you will need to maintain a diet of predominantly softer foods. You will also be provided with medication to help with any post-surgical discomfort. The stitches will be removed in 7-10 days after the treatment. If a restoration of the tooth is needed, you will be asked to wait approximately 1 month after the crown lengthening surgery to have your dentist create a new restoration for your tooth.
