    Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is performed for several reasons. In tissue regeneration bone is added to support teeth where bone has been lost to periodontal disease. Bone grafting is also done to preserve the alveolar (socket) bone after a tooth is lost, or to in crease the available bone for future implant placement.

What Is Involved in the Treatment?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that is usually performed with local anesthesia. The periodontist surgeon will administer the local anesthesia, and once the area is sufficiently numbed, and the patient is comfortable, an incision is made within the gum tissue. The gums are then elevated, and a bone graft material is added to the affected site. . This material will help in the regeneration of your jaw bone. Once the material is applied, the incision is closed with stitches.

Time will need to pass to ensure that the bone graft material has become your own, natural bone. Patients are advised to wait an average of 4 months after the bone graft procedure prior to dental implant placement.
