    Sinus Lifting

    What is a sinus lift?

The American Academy of Periodontology explains sinus lift surgery as a regenerative and a corrective procedure to restore or replace missing bone.

Frequently, there is a lack of available bone in the back of the upper jaw.  When an implant needs to be placed in the site of the missing tooth, the available bone can be increased with a sinus lift procedure.  During this procedure a sinus membrane is literally lifted and a bone graft is placed between the available bone and the sinus membrane.

    Why is my bone missing?

Lack of bone in the back of the upper jaw can be a normal variation in the individual’s anatomy or it can be lost due to periodontal disease or tooth extraction.

    Does it hurt?

Patients are usually anesthetized in the area of surgery with local anesthetics and tolerate the procedure very well in the in-office setting.  After the surgery, medications are provided to help with the recovery.

What happens before, during and after surgery?

Before the sinus lift procedure, our patients will need to have an evaluation with the periodontal surgeon.  Patients are provided certain medications to help with swelling and to prevent infection.  These medications are taken one day prior and on the day of the procedure.

During the sinus lift, the patients are adequately anesthetized, the area is prepared, and a bone graft is added.  There are some stitches that are placed which will need to be removed in approximately 10 days after the procedure.

After surgery, the patients are given specific instructions.  Everyone is generally advised to continue the prescribed medications, refrain from eating hard and acidic foods for several days, and to apply ice to the side of the face where the procedure was completed.
