    Tooth Extraction

One of the first things people notice about another person is their smile. That is why it is important to take steps to keep it healthy and looking great. However, there are times when you might encounter a problem requiring a visit to a periodontist in Langhorne that ultimately leads to the removal of the tooth. Dr. Ann Chernyak and the staff at Premier Periodontics and Implant Dentistry work hard to maintain your natural smile as long as possible. When it comes time for a tooth extraction, we are also here to perform the treatment and replace the tooth with an implant that looks as close to your natural tooth as possible.

    Reasons for Extraction

Although many treatments exist to fix your teeth, there might come a time where the best solution is to remove the troublesome tooth. There are many reasons why you might be in need of a tooth extraction. Some of the most common include:

    • Cosmetic purposes
    • Overcrowding or an extra tooth
    • Decay or infection that might lead to a root canal
    • Tooth unable to be restored
    • Decay or trauma to the tooth resulting in severe damage
    • Fractured or chipped tooth
    • Part of orthodontic treatment preparation

What to Expect from a Tooth Extraction

Prior to the extraction, our periodontist in Langhorne will review your teeth and determine the best course of action. If you and our practitioners determine that an extraction is necessary, then it will begin with the application of an anesthetic. Typically, this is a local anesthetic, but in cases of multiple extractions, and if you have certain health concerns, IV sedation may be advised. Then, an incision is performed and the tooth is removed. It might require sectioning the tooth to make it easier to extract. If necessary, your gum will be closed with sutures after the tooth extraction. You will also be given instructions on how to care for the wound to ensure it heals well and to reduce the risk of infection. You might have to take antibiotics to deter any infection. After four to six months, your gum and underlying bone, should be healthy enough for the placement of an implant.
